PC Shutting Down Under Load After Upgrading to Ryzen 5 5600
Hey everyone, I recently upgraded my CPU from a Ryzen 3 2200G to a Ryzen 5 5600 on my ASRock B450M-HDV R4.0 motherboard. Ever since the upgrade, my system has been experiencing random shutdowns, particularly under stress tests and gaming. I’ve done multiple stress tests, swapped components, and tried tweaking settings, but the issue persists. Looking for advice from anyone who has faced similar problems.
System Specs:
Motherboard: ASRock B450M-HDV R4.0 (BIOS updated to P10.10 and then tested again at P4.9)
CPU: Ryzen 5 5600 (previously Ryzen 3 2200G)
RAM: HyperX 8GB 3200MHz CL16 (HX432C16FB3/8) x2 (also tested with a mix of 8GB 3200MHz + 4GB 2666MHz)
GPU: NVIDIA GTX 1660
PSU: Cooler Master - 550W (Since 2019)
OS: Windows 10 (Updated, SFC scan done, no corrupt files)
Issue Description:
PC shuts down immediately during stress tests when running both CPU & RAM together.
Running a CPU-only stress test works, temps go up to 91°C but stable.
Running a RAM stress test alone shuts down the PC almost instantly.
Swapped RAM sticks, downgraded RAM speed to 2400MHz – still crashes.
Tested back with Ryzen 3 2200G, and all stress tests passed without issues.
No XMP option in BIOS, currently running RAM at 1.2V (not manually changed).
Noticed default RAM timings were unusually high (CL22 at 3200MHz).
Gaming Behavior:
Battlefield 1 (BF1) – Ran for almost an hour before shutting down.
Black Ops 6 (BO6 Beta) – Crashed much sooner compared to BF1.
What I’ve Tried So Far:
BIOS updated before installing the new CPU.
Ran SFC /scannow, no integrity issues.
Tested with different RAM configurations (1 stick, mixed speeds, etc.).
Checked PSU cables & reseated components.
VRM temps not directly measured (Motherboard has no VRM heatsinks).
Haven’t tested with a different PSU yet.
Possible Theories:
VRM limitations on the B450M-HDV R4.0 – this board has a basic VRM design and lacks heatsinks. Could it be struggling to power the Ryzen 5 5600 under load?
Motherboard issue? Given that the Ryzen 3 2200G runs fine but the Ryzen 5 5600 causes shutdowns, could the power delivery be the culprit?
TL;DR:
Upgraded from Ryzen 3 2200G to Ryzen 5 5600 on an ASRock B450M-HDV R4.0. Now, my PC shuts down instantly under RAM stress tests or CPU+RAM stress tests, but runs CPU-only tests fine. 2200G worked perfectly in the same setup. Suspecting VRM limitations or motherboard power delivery problems. Looking for advice from anyone who has faced similar issues.
Has anyone encountered something similar? Is my motherboard just not capable of handling the Ryzen 5 5600 properly, although the Ryzen 3 2200g was stable?
Would love to hear your suggestions.
