Scuffs from staining?

My father in law built this wonderful custom white oak table as a wedding gift for my Wife and I, however after transporting it to our place, there are very slight scuffs in what seems to be the stain/lacker that was applied?

We believe they came from where we had some carpet positioned to protect it while in transport.

He suggests the only way to properly fix it is to re-sand the whole table and re-apply the finish.

Any other creative ideas to minimize the scuffs as much as possible?
