Wages too high? Volunteers to get ofd early? Can someone explain what's happening?

Front End Cashier.

Team Lead came by a little go asking for people to volunteer to get off early today and tomorrow. She said "our wages are too high and we're trying to bring them down."

What's actually going on, should I be worried?
