Worth playing RE4 Remake if I haven't played previous games before?

I played RE5 back on Xbox 360, but that was such a long time ago and I don't really remember anything. RE4 and other RE's are on sale on Steam atm. Only reason I wanna play RE4 is because a couple friends of mine thought it was amazing and recommended it, and that seems to also be the general consensus on here and on Steam reviews too.

If RE4 is alright to play w/o playing the previous ones I may just pick that one alone up. But since they're so cheap, I was also considering picking up RE2 and RE3 remakes as well while I'm at it. Will playing RE2/RE3 give me a bit of backstory on RE4?
