Starting My Journey

I am interested in getting into level 1 runs in all the games. I know remaining the lowest level possible is the only requirement. But I am still debating whether I should upgrade my weapon or not. I will be doing no magic and melee only. Is the general consensus that you can upgrade your weapon?
