So why the male and white assumption on Long Beach Reddit?
In this last week I posted about the Christmas Tree Lighting event put on by City of Long Beach and I posted about a dog walker walking MANY dogs including one held on her torso in a baby harness.
In the Christmas Tree Lighting post I added an .mp4 file of a "cinematic" photo Google Photos created of me and my partner of +30 years at that 2023 event. I am an African American woman and my partner is a White male. https://www.reddit.com/r/longbeach/comments/1h6hp3j/if_youre_attending_the_city_of_long_beach_tree/
In the dog walker post I posted a photo of Jess the dog walker walking six adult dogs then carrying the cutest puppy in a baby harness on her torso. I did a photo of the whole scene then a close up of the puppy in the baby harness. https://www.reddit.com/r/longbeach/comments/1h88mqc/coming_home_from_gym_this_morning_and_saw_the/
In the case of the Christmas Lighting post I said this in the text: "If you are planning to attend the City of Long Beach Christmas Tree Lighting tonight at the Terrace Theater please say hello. I want to know my #LongBeachCA neighbors in person. I am especially interested in meeting my fellow African American Long Beach neighbors"
So here is what happened in the Christmas Tree Lighting post - A number of commenters assumed the poster was the white male in the photo even though the text clearly said "my fellow African American Long Beach neighbors". I know this because these commenters called the post out as weird, off, sketch or creepy . Then when I responded "What's creepy about a Black woman wanting to know more Black neighbors" they admitted that they didn't realize the poster was A) actually female or black B) actually the woman in the image posted. They assumed the White male in the image was the person posting.
I have met or heard of many, many, many men named Adrian. I have NEVER met or heard of ANY man named Adreana. Here on Reddit I am AdreanaInLB. If one hovers over my handle on Reddit one will see a photo of my face. Now I am bald, so maybe someone just glimpsing would think I was a guy. But I don't see how anyone would think I was a WHITE guy.
In the dog walker post the title was "Coming home from the gym I saw the cutest dog walker". What I meant was "OMG look how cute this is with this lady walking six adult dogs and carrying a 7th, a puppy, in a baby harness!". A not insubstantial number of commenters assumed I was male and thought I was taking a picture of the dog walker as in "Hey, look at this picture I snapped of a cute female on the street" and chastised me for being creepy. I corrected those people by letting them know I fully asked permission to take the photo and I fully, when asking permission, said it was for posting.
In the 2020 census Long Beach, California was listed as the second most diverse city in the nation with Oakland, CA being the first. So I don't understand the assumptions that are coming up in my posts. People assuming my posts are posted by men. People assuming my posts are posted by Whites when I am RIGHT THERE in the photo. People in Long Beach live among a diverse population. Reddit itself is diverse. Why these assumptions?
