How to Respond to Religious Co-Worker's Comments.
TL;DR: Co-worker said he doesn't discriminate but thinks LGBTQ+ shouldn't be allowed to do certain things.
I was in a private meeting with a coworker today and he said he is a devoted Christian who doesn't discriminate against the LGBTQ+ but then followed with there are certain things he doesn't support/endorse. He then continued with how he will be tolerant of LGBTQ+ beliefs but he devotes his life to Jesus and won't judge LGBTQ+ people...while saying we shouldn't do certain things. It just seemed like really twisted logic and I had no idea how to respond.
Part of me felt upset since in the past it meant people didn't see me as fully human or deserving of equal rights. And I don't think he understands how thinking LGBTQ+ people shouldn't do certain things can be discrimination or prejudice.
Edit 1: Wow, everyone thank you. I didn't expect this kind of response and I am trying to get to as many as I can. I will be contacting the right people about this experience. It just hit me a bit hard since the moment he got into his background it made the whole conversation weird.
Edit 2: I work with LGBTQ+ students and wanted a space to share. Long story short he gave his background beliefs and said his students would be uncomfortable, which made me uncomfortable. But the space is to be shared with all groups according to my director.
Edit 3: Yes I will report him. Thanks all. When a bad feeling hits it usually is right. I never felt so awkward before in my life. Telling me he doesn't support everything about LGBTQ+ or has issues with certain beliefs since they go against his freaked me out. The moment he told me his beliefs then said his students would be uncomfortable did not sit well me at all.
