Kobo Libra 2 damaged internals

Hey guys, so my kobo Libre 2 stopped working recently and I was very confused until I opened it up today.

On the inside it looks like the components like the heat sink and the CPU and the battery were repeatedly stabbed by a small object, which makes no sense because the back cover is just flat plastic. Anyone know what's going on here?

I know electronics enough to replace the battery without issue, but I'd like it not to happen again, so if anyone has an idea, that would be helpful.
