iPhone 16pro touch gestures ignored

Recently purchased the iPhone 16 pro software updated to iOS 18.0.1

I find the phone randomly ignores a screen touch or swipe gesture

an example is scrolling through pictures in the iPhone photos app and it will miss a swipe as I’m scrolling through.
