Affordable USB media player?

Just moved into a new office that has a tv, but no internet or cable hookups. The tv has a usb connection, but only reads music or photos.

I’m looking for an affordable device that I can hook to the tv via hdmi that will play videos from a thumb drive or external hd, preferably with multiple video codecs.

I’m asking here because there are a ton of devices out there and most of them look like garbage. Anyone know of anything simple, reliable, and affordable that will meet the intent?
