What’s the appropriate amount of schools to apply for in the US

I’m a US citizen and currently an undergrad and hoping to apply for grad in around 2 years from now. Without money being the problem, how much schools is it worth applying for? I hope to go to top programs and I want to do a field of research that’s present in most school (theory of computation or artificial intelligence). Also to clarify I mean a PhD rather than masters.
