MA before PhD

I’m about a year out from finishing my Bachelor’s in History and want to go into academia. I’ve spoken to professors and feel like I understand the process of getting my PhD but I don’t think I want an MA before it if I can help it. Is that realistic? I know it’s technically attainable but I feel like I won’t compare with the few students the programs I’ve looked at will let in with no MA.
