Kills from killstreaks counting towards next killstreak?

Was playing some multiplayer earlier and got myself a chopper gunner but died before using it. Respawned and then called it in, every kill counted towards my reset kill streaks and before I knew it, I had another chopper gunner and dreadnaught ready to go. Never came across this before wondering if this was a bug or normal?
