I can't make straights work

I've played 100hrs and I hear ppl on here say straight are great cause of the upgrades from planet cards. I think ive finished a total of 1 run using straights as my primary hand. Problem is I find myself using so many discards just to get one hand if at all that has a straight. And if I get a larger hand size I naturally gravitate towards full house.

Any tips for good jokers (besides shortcut) for straight runs?

I mostly want to use them to add more verity to my runs, experimentation is the most fun I have with this game.
