Is there a in-universe reason why Batman does any of the Riddler challenges instead of just tracking him down and defeating him?

He's Batman, can't he just track down the Riddler straight away instead of completing all of the challenges? It feels unrealistic and weird to see Batman do random races or simple puzzles while Gotham is either in danger or about to be destroyed.
