One Hit Wonder Directors: The Wachowskis
Lilly and Lana Wachowski (formerly known as Andrew and Laurence respectively) are American film and television directors, writers and producers of Polish descent. Although two of their commercial failures after The Matrix trilogy (Speed Racer and Cloud Atlas) were liked by audiences, the sisters only have one great movie, The Matrix. The Matrix sequels ruined their reputation and don’t even get me started on those lists that have Jupiter Ascending. That trainwreck was just the final nail in the coffin. Reloaded, while very successful, was seen as a quick cash grab that proved Will Smith turning down The Matrix was all for the better as he got an Oscar nomination while Keanu Reeves got Razzie nominations in back to back years, ensuring Smith was still A-list while Reeves lost his roughly one year status as an A-Lister. Bad Boys 2 was loved by audiences while Reloaded was hated. Revolutions didn’t even come close to the success of its predecessors due to Reloaded’s negative impact. V for Vendetta, which the Wachowskis wrote, was good, but their directorial efforts after The Matrix trilogy were failures, and Jupiter Ascending killed their careers. Jordan Peele has gone on to be one of the greatest directors of all time which is something the Wachowskis will never reach now. The Hangover sequels didn’t negatively impact Bradley Cooper’s career, as he has been very successful and will likely be remembered, while the Wachowskis will be forgotten.
