Ovogo says SM is pretty gosh-darn dangerous, does that feel true to you?
Hello. I'm considering moving from Japan to California because my daughter wants to go to high school in America. We are tentatively settled on Samohi, but when I was checking a website called Ovogo that rates cities based off their safety, I was surprised how poorly SM stacked up.
To put these crime rates in context, let's examine how Santa Monica ranks among California's 217 main cities:
Overall Crime (safest places ranking): 204th.
Violent Crime (safest places ranking): 184th.
Property Crime (safest places ranking): 212th.
Particularly compared to places like Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach which are not so far away.
Is this just a result of the increased 'tourist-iness' of SM?
As locals, would you say SM 'feels' like a safe place to live?
Is it just a matter of being careful around the downtown/beach areas?
In particular, would a teenage girl be safe walking around the city?
Is pepper spray a required accessory?
Are bikes able to be kept, or are they viewed as temporary possessions?
Do thieves get brazen enough to gank a phone out of your hand and book it?
We recognize America is not as safe as Japan in general, and I've got her karate skills leveled up pretty high as a precaution, but if SM is viewed as 'dangerous' by locals, it seems like something I should take into consideration before planning too much about a potential move there.
The plan was to look for apartments in the Ocean Park area...is there a sweet spot in terms of getting away from the coast or the freeway areas?
Are the parks safe?
Thanks for any advice!
