Move back east or stay in California?

I (40f) moved across the country to California with my 6 month old and husband (40m) 6 years ago for his job. I was able to find meaningful work here too. We now have 3 kids (7, 3, 8months). The move was always meant to be temporary, our intention was to move back to be near family and our kids near their grandparents and cousins.

The problem is that we’ve grown to love it here. We’ve made friends and kids are in activities. We like our community and think politically like our neighbors. Thinking about leaving now makes us sad. But thinking about not being near my family, especially as my parents age, also makes me sad.

I will have a job opportunity in the next year or so that could either keep me here for the long term or I could take an opening back East, for the long term.

My husband has said since I moved to CA for his career, he will go wherever I want. But I think his preference is to stay. I’m not sure what mine is, I could convince myself of either option multiple times a day. The decision is consuming me.

Has anyone faced a similar decision? Any regrets or advice?
