ECG - how?

I've got PW3. I've tried to use the Fitbit ECG, but no luck. I keep my finger on the crown for 30 seconds as suggested, but the screen blanks after the usual short delay. Even so, I hoped that maybe it was recording. It seems not. Anybody know what to do?
