What does “It’s not you, it’s the OCD” mean?

I’ve seen people say, “It’s not you, it’s the OCD,” but I don’t fully understand what they mean.

Where I live, people don’t really understand OCD. Because of that, I’ve always blamed myself for the way I think and act. I never thought of OCD as something separate from me—I just assumed it was my fault and part of who I am.

What if it’s not OCD, though? What if this is just who I am, and I’m like this because of me, not OCD?

I’d love to hear from others who’ve felt this way or have more knowledge about OCD. How do you stop blaming yourself and see OCD as separate from who you are?
