Kurapika vs Uvogin: Reminder that traditional shonen type powerscaling is useless here
A recent post on this subreddit about Kurapika vs Uvogin reminded me what i love Hunter x Hunter, it doesn't have the rigid powerscaling of every other shonen or seinen.
You still may be defeated and killed in the wrong scenarios by who you audiences considered weaker opponents on paper.
You never know what happens in a Nen battle when two abilities clash, especially if they are good or bad matchups.
Uvogin found a bad matchup with Kurapika's Specialist ability and his Nen conjured chains, that doesn't mean he's less powerful than the latter.
The same Uvogin though could have enough strength to liberate himself from Hisoka's Bungee Gum and wreck him physically.
But the world, the characters and the power system of Hunter x Hunter are so complex, well crafted, and detailed that no person would ever think that this means that Kurapika is stronger than Uvogin and Hisoka.
Many people still don't realize that Kurapika put his life on the line to defeat one Troupe member and the physically strongest one.
With determination he conjured chains with extreme conditions and restrictions, he can only use Judgement Chain against the Troupe members or he will die.
And meanwhile he risked it all with close physical combat to confirm that no one among the Ryodan could break the chains with their sheer strength.
Plus, he reduced his lifespan with Emperor Time to power up his Enhancement thus he could compete blow for blow with him to not be killed by a single Big Bang Impact, for Uvo instead it was just another fight.
In other words, Kurapika never outmatched Uvogin, he came with a plan, risked his life for it to be successful and it payed off.
But he could have been so close to fail we don't even realize it.
