Would a national CL walkout help?
Curious to hear what others think about the idea of organizing a CL Walk Out day. If it could get enough traction across the country, and if hospitals were given advanced notice of when the day would be (the idea being that if they want to prevent an interruption to patient care they respond to a salary negotiation), is that something folks would feel they could do even without being unionized?
Considering how many vacant CL positions are being left unfilled for long periods of time, this may be a good moment for collective action for the profession that makes a publicly visible impact. It could also motivate healthcare allies like our nursing and physician coworkers who appreciate our help to speak up on our behalf to administration.
Considering the majority of hospitals have limited CL on weekends / holidays / overnight, a planned day they are notified about in advance would not present an ethical problem for the CLS in my opinion.
Is this something folks would be interested in, are there other aspects to consider?
It would be riskier than it is for unionized professions, but when I think about all the open positions that can’t be filled due to lack of applicants, I just find it hard to believe anyone would be fired over one walkout day.
With enough prior planning, CL teams could generate support from their multidisciplinary team and nurses and others who aren’t scheduled to work that day could be invited to show up to the walkout in solidarity.
