Career development and during a government wide hiring freeze with no job opportunities
What is the best way to advocate for yourself to increase your chances of getting a new substantive position while on an assignment?Everyone says advocate for yourself but when you're on assignment and career growth is conditional based on an ADM or DG's approval; it feels like my career is in someone's hands. This isn't mindset or me being negative; it's simple fact and frustrating. How do you advocate and prevent your assignment from expiring? Any insight beyond the standard response "Oh just keep applying, and look into other departments......." ummm okay I think that's a default answer for EVERYONE! And yes, I am hustling doing that on a regular basis so looking for something more specific proven/guaranteed tangible/out of the box kind of solutions.
Here is what I'm doing on a regular basis:
GCconnex platform and apply to posted jobs
GCjobs website
GC FB groups and posting once a week
Cold E-mailing managers and directors
Attend YPN social networking events
Attended MegaConnEX
Follow-up with my HR advisor
Follow-up with managers who recommend to check-in
My mentor cannot even think anything else for me to do within my control. That said, NO ADVICE PLEASE- 1. I am "advised out" and obviously info overload, 2. Since I learned recently advice is merely a subjective suggestion based on what worked for someone else, not what is guaranteed to work for me. I don't need opinions, I want facts at this point!
There is a big mental trigger to this whole situation as a PS or in private sector in general that we can easily feel like we are not doing enough or not good enough as a person/employee.
